Description

Released in 2000, the Aero 8 was Morgan’s first properly ‘new’ car since their financially underwhelming Plus 4 Plus of 1964, and personified the fabulous notion of traditional styling with modern underpinnings. Ditching Morgan’s tradition of using an aluminium-skinned wooden body with a heavy steel chassis, the Aero 8 was revolutionary for both Morgan and the wider sports car world, as it featured an all-aluminium bonded chassis.

Designed and engineered in-house with a ‘form follows function’ undertone, the main principle of the car was lightweight luxury. The interior features a comfortable combination of polished hardwoods, hand-stitched leather and electronic technology to create a driving environment that is efficient, ergonomic and sumptuous. Despite all this opulence, the driving experience is hugely responsive, largely due to the overall weight of the car remaining minimal at 1,180kg. Unusual as it does not feature anti-roll bars, the Aero 8 walked the fine line between sports car and supercar. Originally fitted with BMWs thumping-yet-smooth M62 4.4-litre V8, the Series 2 was upgraded to the N62 4.4 litre BMW powerplant, pushing out 333bhp and 450Nm torque, mated to an uprated 6-speed Getrag gearbox resulting in 0-62mph in just 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 160mph.

This rare example is made all the more special due to its single 17-year ownership. In excellent condition both mechanically and cosmetically, this enthusiast-owned example stands its ground very well as a strong part in Morgan’s recent history. The maintenance and general care that this car has experienced through its life is evident in its outstanding condition. It's superbly presented in the lovely colour combination of Bentley Silver Pearl Metallic paint over Old Yarwood Red leather and the interior remains fresh without the usual heavy bolster wear on the driver’s side. With a valid MOT until 23rd August 2023, this Aero 8 has covered just 36,483 (atoc) miles from new, averaging a whisker over 2,000 miles a year. Contained within the significant and comprehensive lever-arch history file are details of the full Morgan agent service history from new, with any and all maintenance work undertaken and documented, along with the original owner’s handbook and associated Morgan documentation.

Despite receiving initial criticism for its seemingly ‘cross-eyed’ look, the Aero 8 has aged remarkably well, with its unusual appearance now being a huge factor in its desirability. With its striking looks, rarity factor and a rumbling 4.4-litre V8, you will certainly turn heads for all the right reasons.

The cherished registration number, V33 ATE, will remain with the car.
