Description
From the only ever Swiss car brand, the Monteverdi High Speed we have for sale today is from 1973 and was the exact car exhibited in the Monteverdi museum in Basel up to its closure in 2016. The car has been completely restored to its original condition and drives fantastically, as any Monteverdi should. With its 7.2L V8, 380 hp, and more than 650 Nm of torque, this hybrid American power/Italian style automobile was one of the fastest GTs of its time.
Monteverdi himself had invested a significant amount of money in the development of the High Speed. The chassis was built in Basel and then brought to the Monteverdi Factory, also in Basel, where the drivetrain was added. The cars would then go to Torino, where their body would be fitted at Fissore. After this, they came back to Basel, where the rest was assembled. The L was a follow-up to the S, having more space in the rear and making for a real 4-seater GT. Indeed, it was 14 cm longer and 4 cm higher, and was considered more elegant than the S, but thus a little less sporty. It was only 1 year after the launch of the S that the L was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show of 1968, where the Swiss carmaker had 2 models to show, something which made all Swiss car enthusiasts extremely proud. Compared to its sporty sister, the L was offered standard with assisted steering and central locking. The powertrain, however, remained the same: a 7.2L Chrysler V8, and the car received great compliments from the auto press of the time:
"Flawless directional stability across the entire speed range, neutral steering behavior in fast corners, overall safe and effortless handling, braking system matching the impressive engine performance, comfortable suspension, etc."
All in all, a fantastic, subtle, and elegant GT car. With 380 hp and a top speed well over 200 km/h, it certainly was no slouch and still feels very modern to drive.
