Description
Chassis No. GHNL80376
Engine No. 16GAU18137
The MGA was the first genuinely modern MG. Its steel construction and sleek, rounded styling brought the company entirely up to date with its competition, yet it remained a true roadster with snap-in side curtains and no outside door handles. Naturally, it became a worldwide favorite, as it was truly one of the sports cars that generations of enthusiasts cut their teeth upon; some 57,000 were produced over a seven-year run, and many of them were exported to the United States.
Built new as a left-hand-drive example for export to North America, this 1960 MG MGA 1600 Roadster was specified with a heater and disc wheels and is believed to have started life in New Mexico. Upon its discovery, previous research shows that the car received a complete body-off restoration from 2004 to 2006. The frame was stripped, primed, and coated in black polyurethane, while the body was primed, base-coated in Chariot Red, and finished with multiple layers of clear coat. Original floorboards were replaced and sealed, and the dashboard, gauges, and switch gear remain original, with only the knobs replaced. A new correct cloth-braided wiring harness, new steering wheel, and new convertible top and tonneau cover complete the restoration. The black carpeting and tan leather interior complement the Chariot Red exterior beautifully.
The engine was rebuilt with 0.60 inch over pistons, a 0.20 inch crankshaft, and new bearings, while Stellite valves and bronze guides were added to the head. The rest of the engine compartment was restored to original specifications, including a new clutch, fuel pump, and stainless steel exhaust.
The 1,200 hour restoration used primarily original and NOS parts, ensuring a faithful return to factory original specifications. As a testament to the quality of the work the car remains in fine condition nearly 20 years after completion of the restoration. With just over 7,000 miles completed since, this 1960 MG MGA 1600 Roadster remains a charming example of the quintessential British sports car.
