Description

Founded in 1909 in Trenton, New Jersey by the Roebling family, the Mercer Company produced some of the most celebrated high-performance automobiles of the early 20th century. Their early success in racing, and the engineering and production of the one of the first American sports cars, the Raceabout, which debuted in 1910, earned Mercer a respected place in the annals of American motoring. Changes in management brought about a major product-line update in 1915, the advent of the L-head four-cylinder engine and updated bodywork, but the founding principles of the company were not lost in the company’s latter-day offerings.

Mark Smith acquired this Series 5 Sporting in 2005 from a Washington State-based collector who had purchased it from an enthusiast in Florida three years prior. Advised that the Mercer was a particularly well-kept example of the approximately 10 Sportings known to the Mercer club, Mr. Smith was eager to add it to his collection. As one of the larger-scale Mercers to be built, the Sporting is appointed with dual, raked windshields, a side curtain stowage compartment, and commodious room for five, yet it still evokes the spirit and much of the performance of Mercer’s illustrious Raceabout.
