Description
It's hard to believe that the R107 Mercedes SL is now over 50 years old, yet in 1971 this new chapter in the history of the SL sports car began. It was the first SL with a V8 engine, it had a thoroughly modern new design, it was a self-confident motor car; sporty yet luxurious, quick yet comfortable. In many ways it was, and remains, the perfect convertible. The new SL featured a number of technical innovations such as defined crumple zones, high-strength steels in the A-pillars, a windscreen frame with bonded glass, padded surfaces and deformable elements in the interior. From March 1980, ABS was available and from January 1982, a driver’s airbag and belt tensioners. The ultimate engine choice in Europe was to be found with the 500SL of 1980, with 240bhp available (bearing in mind a Porsche 911 offered a 'mere' 204 bhp at the time). The interiors became even more luxurious, the car's weight was reduced with new alloy bonnets and boot lids and in 1985, the range was revised for the final time with a redesigned engine for the 500SL with electronic ignition and Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection, revised suspension, improved rust-proofing and some new wheels.
The 500SL on offer here does date from 1985 and is splendidly finished in blue black metallic with cream perforated hide. Being one of the last produced, pre-facelift, the specification is extensive, listing amongst others, green glass with a top tint, cruise control, heated seats, air conditioning, limited-slip differential, remote central locking and the familiar Mercedes fire extinguisher. With attention to detail at the forefront of the current owners mind, it should be noted that the original and complete tool roll remains in place alongside the unused first aid kit. Also accompanying the car is a comprehensive service history and associated paperwork including a fresh MOT Certificate due to expire 2nd November 2023. With unblemished paintwork, an outstanding interior, newly fitted hood and a colour-matched hardtop, this is a simply exceptional example of these timeless roadsters and would happily grace any serious collection.
