Roll up! Roll up! Feast your eyes on the most affordable, and usable, V8 R107 for sale in the UK today.

Finished in Gloss White with Beige Leather, this 450SL was delivered new to South Africa in 1977. South African specification cars are essentially identical to UK specification cars except with a different MPH & KPH speedometer (UK cars speedo only reads MPH).

This SL was imported into the UK in 2002 and has been registered here since. Accompanying the car is a folder containing lots of invoices and MOTs, chronicling its time in the UK.

Naturally the car at this money is no concours winner, but it is relatively presentable and we would campaign it this coming summer exactly as it is. There are some scabby bits on the paint around the edges on the arches/wing bottoms and door shuts and really to get it back to its former glory the car would want some welding respray. That said, I would continue to use it for now as it still looks well.

Over the past 15 months, the car has had around £3,000 worth of work carried out including extensive welding to the underside to get it fit for MOT having been sat for a couple of years, a service and some operational niggles addressed as necessary such as rebuilding one of the door glass electric window motors. The car was subsequently MOT'd in January 2023 with the only advisories being a corroded brake pipe and a cracked track rod dust cover. It has done a few hundred miles since.

The black mohair soft top is in good condition and the rear plastic windows on it are clear (not milky or yellow). The car also has a white removable hardtop with it. There is a hairline crack running through the rear window glass on the hardtop and some bits of bubbling too though it is air and water tight.

Mechanically, the SL is great. That beautifully smooth 4.5 litre V8 still pulls like a train. The car starts with the first turn of the key and we have just enjoyed 100 miles in it ourselves since collecting it, without fault. The car handles exactly as an R107 should, like a fast armchair. 

Ultimately, this 450SL represents a great opportunity to enter classic Mercedes ownership without breaking the bank with a car that can be enjoyed as is for now and improved upon over time. Being a 1977 example the car is also ULEZ and Road Tax exempt making it the ultimate summer daily driver contender.
