Description

Elegant Mercedes Model W113 Pagoda

Synonymous with California style and East Coast opulence, the 1960's and 70's Mercedes SL Pagodas continue to be the definition of that era's automotive style. The car on offer is a stunning fully restored and very correct example with conditioning, an automatic transmission and two tops.

This Car’s Past

Little is known of the history of this beautiful Pagoda, prior to it's restoration in 2013-14. At that time, it was purchased from the St Louis Car Museum, then delivered to Don Dickinson of Clinton GA in Red/Tan and transformed into a truly stunning example of one of Mercedes' iconic sports cars. Following a comprehensive restoration, it was in the Higginbotham collection, then traded to G And S Motors of Fletcher NC in 2015. Owner, Ken Sterne was so impressed with it's condition and finish, he added to his own collection, where it has remained until on offer here.

History of The Model

The 280 SL was the last of the “Pagoda Roof” SL series which were produced by Mercedes Benz from 1964 through to 1971. The iconic lines of that Pagoda roof debuted with the 1964 230SL and ended with the beautiful 280SL. These cars are becoming increasingly popular due to their classic styling, 2.8 litre, fuel-injected 6-cylinder engines and the available options of automatic transmission with floor shift, air conditioning, both detachable hard top and fold-away convertible top, individual driver and passenger heater controls and the top-of-the-line Becker “Mexico” signal-seeking AM-FM/cassette stereo.

Restoration

Fully documented comprehensive restoration carried out by Don Dickinson of Clinton GA from 2013 to 2014. Documentation includes receipts and photos.
Market Trend

As with a majority of 1960's and 70's European sports cars, the 280SL Pagodas have experienced a rapid value increase over the last four to five years. The current easing of the market has seen prices fall back a little, settle and now slowly appreciate again, as evidenced by the recent $203,500 paid for a wonderful example at RM's 2016 Amelia Island sale.

Summary

A stunning Mercedes W113 280SL Pagoda with the right options, presented in in classic Mercedes Benz colors. This is a joy to drive with the hardtop on or the soft top down and will be well-received at any event. As further testament to their popularity and drivability, it's interesting to note that Michael Kunz the former Head of Mercedes Benz Classic Worldwide is a 280SL owner and enthusiast.
