Description

Chassis No. 113.044-12006179

Engine No. 130-983-12-003900

This remarkable two-tone, U.S.-market 280 SL is a true preservation class, benchmark example of the model bearing only 7,625 miles from new at the time of cataloging. The Pagoda's remarkable state of preservation owes to the fact that it was conserved and mostly undriven since 1973 when it was put away as a "keeper" by Jules Barsotti, owner of European Motors (today known as Mercedes-Benz of San Francisco).

The Pagoda was delivered as a U.S.-market example optioned with a floor-shift automatic transmission, power steering, and an exterior rearview mirror. The striking SL was delivered exactly as it appears today in the attractive scheme of Red (576) with a contrasting Black (040) hardtop. It is believed that it was taken in by the dealership on trade just a few years after it was new.

Kept by the family and unused for decades, the 280 SL was preserved in static storage in a San Francisco garage. In preparation for sale, the highly original Pagoda was entrusted to R&M Automotive in San Francisco, California in the summer of 2024 to be returned to roadworthy condition. This work, totaling over $14,600, included a fuel system service, new brake master cylinder, and a comprehensive front and rear brake refurbishment including new calipers, pads, and hoses. New Vredestein Sprint Classic tires were installed, while the engine oil and filter and battery were refreshed. The steering tie rods on both sides were replaced and an alignment was performed.

Today this must be one of the finest, preservation grade W113 SLs in existence. It retains an extraordinary amount of factory finishes. A paint meter inspection revealed a car that appears to wear much of its original factory paint, while body number stampings are present. The engine bay and undercarriage are also indicative of a low mileage vehicle that was operated little during its lifetime. Interior finishes are original and in fine order throughout. It should be noted that the black soft top fabric has shrunk due to aging and can presently only be latched at one end. However, in all respects, this is a very gently used Pagoda.

Mercedes' W113 SL has over time emerged as a timeless classic amongst the Sport Leicht series of automobiles. Here is a stellar, standout example that has been out of the public eye for the last half century; it should serve as a benchmark for all other W113 cars, and will certainly make a splash when it makes its concours debut.
