Description

The Mercedes number combination 280 refers to the motorization of the vehicle, in this case the 2,8 six-cylinder block that delivers 170hp.

Mercedes chose the abbreviation “SL” (Sport Leicht) for its sporty models. The Pagode ensures that the owner can easily cover many comfortable kilometers, while enjoying the benefits of the safety of a hardtop with the lifestyle cachet of a soft top. The 2,8 liter engine was the biggest in the SL range, this makes it a great driver together with the automatic gearbox.
This absolute stunning example in the gorgeous sporty color blend from the Datacard matching “Signalrot” (568) over a sand beige leather interior (instead of the original black interior), has been fully nuts and bolt restored in Belgium (a lot of pictures are available). In 1968 the car has been in ordered by an American citizen for the USA market, but just before delivery, this career military was informed he had to stay in Germany. That’s why the car was converted to European standards and why the engine number matches with the European (German) Fahrzeugbrief and not with the initial Datacard established for delivery to the USA. This information has been confirmed by the Stuttgart manufacture.
Like the other W113 models, the 280 used a monocoque chassis, with front suspension by coil springs and wishbones, while the rear featured a single-pivot swing axle and transverse springs set to compensate for camber. The car is equipped with disc brakes all around, which was also not common for cars of this time.

By the time the 280SL gave way to the next generation SL, the R107, it had firmly established itself as one of the Stuttgart company’s most beautiful cars. With timeless graceful styling, spirited performance and driving characteristics, quality and reliability, the SL series cars built from 1963 to 1971 are solid collector’s items that are expected to continue to increase in value.
The completely restored car covered a bit more than 5000 km after restoration. Enough to rectify any post restoration issue. This classic beauty, featured with a great sounding 6-cylinder engine and 4-speeds automatic transmission is an ideal classic car for long and short trips.
