Description

The Mercedes-Benz W113 SL was launched at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show as the replacement for the popular W121 SL 190. Penned by Mercedes lead designer, Paul Bracq, as principally a two-seater luxury sports touring convertible with a slightly concave hardtop, which inspired the “Pagoda” nickname. All models were equipped with six-cylinder engines with multipoint fuel injection. The bonnet, boot lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminium to reduce weight, this combined with excellent suspension, powerful brakes made for superb handling. Mercedes launched the 280 SL in December 1967 with production ending in February 1971. Boasting 168 bhp with the option of either an automatic or manual transmission the 280 SL was capable of speeds in excess of 124 mph making for effortless European touring.

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda offered here at Autostorico was supplied in France in 1971, before being shipped to Virginia in the USA. Finished in its original Sandy Beige Metallic with Cognac leather interior and Black soft top, this lovely matching numbers example remained in the USA until 1991 when it returned to Ireland. Purchased by its current owner in 2015 the car has been maintained to an exceptionally high standard. Work was entrusted to Pagoda marque specialist Paul Bracq Atelier in Bordeaux which is run by Boris Bracq the son of Mercedes retired lead designer Paul Bracq. Invoices totalling €28,000 for recent work include; full engine rebuild including new pistons and re-bore, fuel system overhaul, radiator refurb, new exhaust system, gearbox overhaul, new clutch and paintwork.

Offered for sale with its factory hardtop, current V5 registration document and a history file containing numerous invoices, photographic record of recent works and other related material.
