The world was first introduced to the Mercedes-Benz SL lineup at the International Motor Sports Show in New York in February 1954, where both the 300 SL and 190 SL were unveiled. The 190 SL was positioned as a refined touring car, offering excellent sporting characteristics and a similar aesthetic appeal. Powered by a 1.9-liter inline-four with dual carburetors, the 190 SL was designed to compete with rivals like the Porsche 356. True to Mercedes-Benz's legacy of advanced engineering, the 190 SL featured an independent front suspension, a low-pivot swing axle, and power-ventilated drum brakes - many of which were shared with the more performance-oriented 300 SL.
Purchased by the current owner in 2015, this 190 SL was restored under prior ownership to its current presentation in Mercedes racing colors of Silver Grey Metallic (DB 180) over a Red Leather (1079) interior. The painted dashboard houses a host of gauges to monitor the running condition and an era appropriate Condor AM radio with a fender-mounted antenna. The 1.9-liter inline four-cylinder is fed by a pair of original Solex carburetors, and it's mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Complete with a Black folding soft top, the car is well suited for use on countless tours and rallies it would be eligible to take part worldwide.
Both a work of automotive art and a delight to drive, this 190 SL offers the captivating looks of a 1950s sports tourer combined with the refined touches that have always been a hallmark of Mercedes-Benz.
