The management at Mercedes-Benz was facing an issue in the early 2010s. Sales of their CL line of coupes were doing well, but instead of repeat buyers, Mercedes customers were moving to Bentley. Not one to back down from a challenge, Mercedes engineers stepped up to design a car more than capable of taking on the crew at Crewe. This work culminated in the range-topping and all-new 2015 S 65 AMG coupe.

The first, and most obvious difference, is the name change from CL to S class, simplifying the nomenclature and hierarchy of their lineup. These S class coupes are true four-seaters meant to cross continents at blistering speeds in the utmost comfort. When reviewing potential engines that would be up to the task of powering the new S 65, it was determined that no less than a V12 would do. Once AMG had finished their work with the six-liter M279 V12, power levels were well suited for such a car, with 621 hp on tap and a monumental torque rating of 1,000 NM (738 lb-ft) at just 2,300 rpm. All this power moves the nearly two-and-a-half ton coupe to 60 mph in four seconds flat on its way to a top speed of 186 mph.

The S 65's outright power and the resulting speed is a wonderful achievement, but Mercedes' best trait is providing ultimate comfort while moving quickly. Handling is managed by what Mercedes calls "Magic Body Control." This system is part of the Active Body Control with self-leveling hydraulic suspension on all four corners. These two systems, paired with sensors scanning the road ahead, allow the car to predict upcoming road imperfections and change the firmness or raise a single wheel to mitigate any harshness coming into the cabin. As a final flourish, this AMG also features 'Dynamic Curve,' a system which leans the car into a corner, much like a motorcycle rider would, to lessen any g-forces felt while cornering.

Offered here is a fantastic S 65 coupe in non-metallic Black over the AMG Exclusive Black Nappa leather interior. The Burmester High-End Sound System gives the coupe an impressive 1,540-watt output with an equally remarkable 24 speakers. Once delivered, Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich did a superb job keeping this special AMG in excellent order. Recently coming from a 'B-service,' this example with just 6,275 miles is prime for enjoyment.
