Interesting configuration
In the 1970s, Mercedes occupied the coupe and cabriolet market with the famous R107 (SL roadster) and C107 (SLC coupe). But in that generation, the coupe was no more than a roadster with a welded hardtop, whose overall design suffered from a platform that was too short (and a wheelbase that was too long) and less elegant. For the 1980s, the managers of the Stuttgart firm went back to basics, designing a coupe from scratch on the (shortened) basis of the W126 saloon. And the C126 coupé will be, as the advertising brochures claim, "the best car in the world". The new Sonderklasse Einsprintzung Coupé (SEC, S-class, injection, coupé) was unveiled at the 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show. For its designer, Bruno Sacco (the brand's design boss from 1975 to 1999), "this car has the most beautiful face of any Mercedes for which I have been responsible for design." On top of that (and unlike the R107 or the W126 saloon), it will only be available with V8 engines, with four different engine sizes. At its launch, the range consisted of the 380 SEC (204 bhp) and 500 SEC (231 bhp); from 1986 onwards, the anti-pollution standards and the fitting of catalysts which resulted in a 20% loss of power gave rise to the 420 SEC (218 bhp, replacing the 380 SEC) and the "big" 560 SEC (300 bhp). By October 1991, 74,000 Mercedes C126 SECs rolled off the production line.
The 420 SEC we are presenting, which marks the entry-level of this legendary S-Class coupe from 1986, is in a rather incredible original condition. It was in 2016 that its current owner acquired it. Since then, he has only driven it a few hundred kilometers. An oil change label shows that the car was serviced at 135,106 km in December 2016, whereas on the day of our test drive it had 135,699 km. There is very little documentation with the car, but it is known that the car was sold new in Germany. The car is in perfect working order and still has a new spare wheel and a complete tool kit in original canvas. A rare condition that will delight the most demanding enthusiasts of the make and model.
This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on June the 20th, 2021.
