Description

Chassis No. 109.018.12.002547

Engine No. 100.981.12.002589

The introduction of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 sedan in 1968 marked a pivotal moment in automotive history, establishing a new category of high-performance luxury sedans. Spearheaded by lead engineer Erich Waxenberger, this model seamlessly integrated the opulence of the 300 SEL grand touring sedan with the formidable 6.3-liter V8 engine and transmission from the prestigious 600 "Grosser."

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1968, the 300 SEL 6.3 garnered immediate acclaim for its discreet yet commanding design, concealing its extraordinary performance capabilities beneath an understated exterior. Distinguished by broader tires, dual halogen headlights, and supplementary distance beam headlights, it quickly became a sensation among enthusiasts and automotive critics alike.

Despite its premium price tag-commanding nearly $4,000 more than the standard 300 SEL and more than double the cost of the 280 SE-the 300 SEL 6.3 found a devoted audience among discerning buyers who appreciated its unmatched blend of luxury, performance, and exclusivity. Its introduction heralded a new era where sedans could rival contemporary sports cars in sheer power and driving dynamics, setting a benchmark that continues to influence automotive engineering and design to this day.

Finished in Dark Olive (291), this 1970 300 SEL 6.3, was destined for the United States when new. As a result, the came well equipped with numerous standard features including its Bamboo Leather (249) interior, power windows, and air conditioning, in addition to the optional power sunroof. The car has since been upgraded with 14 inch "Bundt" alloy wheels adding to its sporting appeal. Inside the car retains a period-correct Becker Grand Prix radio. Under current ownership the highly original Mercedes-Benz has been treated to a thorough service and detailing.

Today this highly collectible 6.3 remains in astonishingly well-preserved and original condition with only 66,665 miles at the time of cataloging that are believed to be original. Accompanied by original documentation including its data card, owner's manual, service booklet, tools, service records from specialist shops dating back the 1990s, and Becker radio information packet, this splendid 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 is a shining example of what many consider to be the world's first super sedan with supercar levels of performance, in particularly attractive colors.
