Description
In March 1968 Daimler Benz presented, at the Geneva salon, a limousine which, on closer inspection, proved to be a combination of the type 300 SEL of the 109 series, introduced in 1965, and the luxury saloon of the type 600. From the latter the car received the 6.3 litre V8 engine including the automatic gearbox which, with its 250 horsepower was able to accelerate the new Benz to 220 km/h and cover the 0 to 100km/h in 7.4 seconds. With this very rapid performance, the 300 SEL instantly became one of the fastest saloons in the world, able to compete with sports cars such as a Porsche 911 S or the Jaguar E-type 4.2. The example offered, one of 6’526 saloons built, was exported to the USA in 1969 and registered there for the first time. In 2008, the rapid Merc was taken over by the vendor and registered at his holiday residence in Florida. According to the well-known dealer the Mercedes then came out of first-hand ownership and had covered a mere 61’300 miles. The coachwork had been partially restored with the interior in lovingly maintained original condition. At the end of 2009 the owner decided to bring the car to Switzerland and add it to his collection here. After arrival, the 300 was prepared for the very stringent Swiss MOT and in February 2010 with then 62’625 miles driven, it received its first Veteran MOT. Unfortunately, time constrains didn‘t allow much use of the noble steed but it was nevertheless carefully and regularly maintained. In 2023 the air suspension was overhauled. With now 65’000 miles driven and two owners, the saloon is in good to very good and very original condition and the last veteran MOT was completed in September 2022
