Description

The successful W111 series from Mercedes-Benz received numerous upgrades for the 1965 model year; of particular note was the increase in displacement to 2.5 liters. The remarkable example presented here is one of just 954 cabriolet variants completed for the worldwide market and is clearly among the best preserved of all extant.

Sold new via the Mercedes-Benz European Delivery Program in mid-1966, the 250 SE was imported later that year and resided at the original owner’s San Francisco home in the exclusive Ashbury Heights neighborhood; it remained in his care for the next 31 years. During the 250 SE’s time in the collection of noted enthusiast Dr. L. Philip Lutfy of Arizona, it was awarded the Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s Silver Star Certificate for originality. Indeed, according to the consignor, the Cabriolet retains its irreplaceable, original black Roser hides, zebrano wood, and a majority of its White (DB 50) paint. Closer inspection reveals a beautifully preserved engine bay with original finishes and assembly markings. The trunk contains the original spare wheel, jack, and a rare set of Hepco fitted luggage, and the tool roll remains in its original plastic bag. Rarely seen with a four-speed manual gearbox, this 250 SE offers spirited driving dynamics, timeless styling, and the rarified feeling of an original automobile that has been looked after by doting owners since new.
