Description
Chassis No. 111.023-10030470
The supremely elegant Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet made its debut at the 1959 Frankfurt Auto Show. Offered in series production from 1961-1965, the new W111 bodied Cabriolet was a direct replacement for the two-door W128 'Ponton' series. More modern in design, the luxurious 220 SE Coupe and Cabriolet were better engineered and appointed, with crumple zones, leather upholstery, and front disc brakes. By the time W111 production ceased in October 1965, Mercedes had produced only 2,729 SE Cabriolets out of a total of 82,988 SE models.
According to a copy of the 'Fahrzeug Daten' data card included with the car, this 1962 Mercedes Benz 220 SE Cabriolet was originally finished White (050) with a Maroon and Red leather interior (204), and black cloth convertible top (720). Completion at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Untertürkheim was noted as 7, June 1962. Originally delivered in Germany,, it made its way across the Atlantic to the USA on the 'Tosca' arriving stateside 28, April 1984.
Since its arrival in the USA it has been treated to a documented, bare-metal restoration, in its original, factory-built colors. Photos of the restoration accompany the car. Power comes from a 2.5 L mechanically fuel-injected inline-six, sourced from a 250 SL, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The engine bay is extremely tidy, however, underneath, the engine and rear axle assembly appear to be weeping fluid. Mechanical restoration work included rebuilding of the brakes and fuel system and a clutch replacement. All four hubcaps are present and paired with a set of thin-whitewall tires.
Inside, the interior has been restored to original specifications. Maroon leather covers the dash and interior beltline creating the perfect shade contrast to the Red leather seats and carpets. Wood dashboard and center console trim are refinished and the brightwork throughout the cabin has seen attention as well. A thin-rimmed, ivory padded steering wheel, VDO gauges and original, functioning Blaupunkt radio round out the interior. Copies of a 2017 service accompany the car with rear shocks, tie rod ends, steering damper and idler arm being replaced topped off with a four wheel alignment to make sure the roadholding is as stately as the looks.
With room for four, this elegant German sporting grand tourer is a classic that begs to be enjoyed at a show or in regular use anywhere the sun shines. It is offered for sale with a tonneau cover, factory records, tools, and a binder with photos documenting the restoration work.
