Description
"The Mercedes-Benz G-Class or G-Wagon, short for Geländewagen (cross-country vehicle), is characterised by its boxy styling and body-on-frame construction. It uses three fully locking differentials, one of the few vehicles to have such a feature. The G-Class is still in production and is one of the longest produced Mercedes-Benz vehicles in their history with a span of 32 years. It was developed as a military vehicle from a suggestion by the Shah of Iran and offered as a civilian version in 1979. The first major refinements were introduced in 1981, including an automatic transmission, air conditioning, an auxiliary fuel tank, protective headlamp grilles and a cable winch. Fuel injection became available in 1982 when the 230GE was introduced in Turin, along with more comfortable and supportive front seats, auxiliary heating, wider tyres and wheel arches. For 1985, differential locks, central door locking and a tachometer became standard.
This very well presented metallic Beryll Blue which is actually Green in colour with grey cloth trim this GES G-Wagon was originally purchased from Mercedes-Benz Bournemouth on 18th October 1991. Supplied with metallic paint, automatic transmission, wide alloy wheels and an electric sunroof, the then owner exchanged his 280 GES for the more powerful model which cost £37,143 at the time and included over £5,000 of optional extras. Today the car presents excellently; the interior is especially well kept for a 32 year old ‘utility’ car but perhaps this is indicative of the beginning of the luxury SUV market with little use as a utilitarian vehicle and the only upgrade are the headlights which are now LED. The history file is comprehensive with original sales brochures, original order and details from the supplying dealer together with numerous invoices. Owned by our vendor since 2020 this is a very well-kept example in great condition throughout.
