Description
Development of the G-Wagen - short for Gelandewagen or 'Cross Country Vehicle' - began during the early 1970s at the suggestion of the Shah of Iran (then a major Mercedes-Benz shareholder). Exhaustively tested amidst the German coalfields, Sahara Desert and Artic Circle, the first workable prototype emerged during 1974. Entering production five years later, the G-Wagen began its metamorphosis from functional off-roader to luxury SUV in 1981 when niceties such as air-conditioning and automatic transmission joined the options list. Available in short- and long-wheelbase guises, Mercedes-Benz's evergreen 4x4 was thoroughly revised for 1990. Rechristened the 463 G-Class, it gained a trio of electric locking differentials, full-time 4WD, ABS brakes and an upgraded interior complete with wooden accents. The sale G-Class is a long wheel base example which is finished in Deep Red. It boasts only having 2 previous keepers and is offered with a collection of old MOT certificates plus its understood to have a fresh MOT by the time of sale.
