The W186 Series from the early 50s to the early 60s was the first post war luxury limousine from Mercedes Benz and clearly demonstrated that the Stuttgart factory was back on its feet. With its strong 3 litre inline 6 delivering 125 hp, finest leather interior and stately appearance, the 300 proved very popular not only with the then German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer (giving the car its nickname). 6’214 examples of the 300 and 300b series found buyers between 1951 and 1955. Our most noble example with its optional Webasto folding roof was delivered in 1955 most probably in Germany and in later years shipped to the USA. There, according to our information, the car was completely restored around 20 years ago. The coachwork was removed from the chassis and repainted in its original colour “DB157 grey/beige”. The bare chassis was powder coated, the engine overhauled, all woodwork restored and the seats recovered with new Roser leather. In 2011, just before completion of the works, the “Adenauer” was purchased and imported by an enthusiast from Liechtenstein. On arrival it was evident that the engine did not run properly and the crankshaft was found to be damaged. The owner, avoiding the additional outlay, decided to store the car for the next couple of years. In 2019 the 300 was traded in in exchange for a new car. This was eventually followed by a renewed engine overhaul with the replacement of the crankshaft, an overhaul of the brakes and fitment of new tyres. Due to lack of time, the work required was only completed to around 90% as of today, with certain parts still needing re-chroming and a fine tuning of the engine necessary. The imposing saloon appears complete, can be driven and will be sold with US documentation and a Swiss customs clearance.
