Description

The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) originated in 1984, providing a venue for manufacturers to showcase race versions of production coupes and sedans. To battle BMW’s E30 M3, Mercedes-Benz developed its W201-style 190-series sedan for competition. Collaborating with British engineering company Cosworth, Mercedes-Benz fitted the standard 2.3-liter engine with an alloy cylinder head, dual-overhead cams, and four valves per cylinder, with displacement increasing to 2.5 liters in 1998. Other improvements included larger spoilers, wider fenders, and an upgraded suspension with stiffer springs and larger anti-roll bars. Mercedes-Benz secured multiple race wins, ultimately clinching the championship with their Evolution II model in 1992. To satisfy homologation requirements, Mercedes-Benz built limited numbers of each Evolution model, including 502 units of the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II.

Delivered new through Mercedes-Benz Frankfurt in April 1990, this Evolution II is the 106th of 502 built. Finished in Blauschwarz (Black Pearl) Metallic with an Anthracite leather interior, the car features heated seats, sunroof, air bag equipped steering wheel, and a Mercedes-Benz radio. The Mercedes-Benz also features an additional front chin spoiler and rear deck-lid spoiler below the larger rear wing. Acquired into a prominent collection in 2021, this example was recently serviced by the owner’s in-house team and fitted with new tires. It is accompanied by books, tool kit, and spare.
