Description

This superb Maserati Sebring was developed from Maserati’s 3500 GT road car whose purpose had been to convert the company’s racing prowess to the road and revive the company’s fortunes. The stylish and fast Sebring was named in honour of Maserati’s victory at the gruelling 12 hour race held there in 1957.

It was aimed at the luxury Grand Touring market and while various top Italian coach builders penned attractive designs for the 3500 GT, the Sebring’s beautiful bodywork was by Vignale from a Giovanni Michelotti design. Sitting on a shortened 3500 GT chassis and powered by the smooth, six cylindered 3,500 cc engine the car was introduced in 1962.

This stunning 1st series car was completed in October 1962. An original, UK supplied example in right drive that was finished in the appealing Rosso Cordoba with light tan interior. Information from the Maserati club says that it was delivered to an owner in London before spending time in Jersey prior to returning to the UK and undergoing its first restoration in the Nineties. The paperwork file documents these works and the subsequent ownership history since. In recent years it has been the subject of a very extensive restoration by the renowned specialists DK Engineering. Bills to the tune of £140,000 were spent on this matching numbers example and it looks and drives superbly. The inevitable comparisons one can draw when judged against its peers, for instance the Aston Martin DB5 and the Ferrari 250 PF Coupe show it to be an under valued and discerning choice for those looking for something a little bit different!
