When the Maserati Ghibli made its debut in 1966, rivals from Ferrari and Lamborghini suddenly looked to be left behind by the sleek coupés impressive styling. An aggressively angular wedge styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro, Modenas new flagship was no less dramatic under the skin. Boasting a 306 horsepower, quad-cam, 4,719-cc dry-sump V-8, the Ghibli was breathtakingly fastyet in 1969 Maserati upped the ante. Badged as the Ghibli SS, the revised Tipo AM115/49 employed a 4,930-cc V-8. Developing 330 horsepower and huge reserves of torque, the 280 km/h coupé was Modenas fastest production model yetand a more-than-fitting concurrent to Ferraris Daytona.

From a total of 1,170 fixed-head Ghiblis, only 425 are believed to have been to SS specification with the 4.9-litre engine. Chassis 1586 is one such machine. Finished in its original colours of Rosso Fuoco with black leather, it is recorded to have rolled off the assembly line on 6 October 1970. Originally delivered to northern Italy, more recently the Maserati has spent time in Belgium and Germany. Invoices show that 9,580 was invested in maintenance (including a complete exhaust) while in the ownership of The Curated Collection.

This is a car for the Maserati enthusiast seeking one of the finest, best-equipped examples of one of the famed automakers greatest, most evocative creations.
