Description

Designed by Giulio Alfieri and bodied by Touring, the 3500 GT was a luxury 2+2 Coupe that benefited heavily from Maserati’s previous racing experience. Beneath its elegantly styled Superleggera (Super light)body, consisting of a steel frame wrapped in aluminum panels, sat a tubular chassis and a DOHC inline six-cylinder engine derived from the 350S sports car.

Built in July 1961, the Maserati 3500 GT Coupe presented here was delivered to its original owner in Italy, and as an early example, it features three Weber carburetors, front disc brakes, and a five-speed ZF manual gearbox. Joining the owner’s collection in 2015, this 3500 GT is finished in Lancia Dark Blue with a dark red leather interior. Recognizing its refined patina, he saw an opportunity to enhance and preserve the car’s original qualities and commenced an intensive preservation effort to renew the car’s systems while preserving its lovely patinated appearance. Working with Graham Long’s Graham Engineering & Motorsport, the fuel, braking, cooling, electrical, ventilation, exhaust, ignition, and induction systems were expertly addressed. The engine’s compression was measured at an even 200–205 psi across all cylinders. Additionally, the interior leather was treated and painstakingly preserved, and the carpets were intensively cleaned. The results of the effort are undeniable, and the Maserati shows today much as it would have in period.A beautifully presented example of one of the marque’s first significant production models, this 3500 GT stands tall in its presentation as a never comprehensively restored survivor, retaining its original essence.
