By 1985 Lola had become a prolific and hugely successful producer of racing cars for lower formulae, sports-racing and American Indycar racing. It was this link which brought the name back to Grand Prix racing. Carl Haas, as well as being Lola’s long-time American importer, ran an Indycar team in partnership with actor Paul Newman with backing from the Beatrice corporation. When Haas decided to try Formula One he had the basic components of an entry in place. Through his connections, the car was drawn up by Lola designers and was manufactured by the FORCE concern to be run by Team Haas.
