Description
Purchased in 1933 from its original owner and avid Locomobile enthusiast, this Model 48 Sportif remained in single family ownership for the next 72 years. Having been garaged since 1948, the vehicle spent much of its life untouched before being acquired by a longtime Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) member in 2005. Shortly after returning the vehicle to working order, the Sportif was invited to take part in the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, where it was awarded Second in the Preservation Class. Since then, the Sportif has only changed hands twice, with both subsequent owners equally committed to its preservation.
Under its current owner, several improvements have been made to the vehicle’s reliability while maintaining the strictest adherence to its originality. The Locomobile benefits from a recent engine rebuild, which included the use of modern pistons and rings, replacing the original babbitt bearings with shell bearings, and a conversion to a full pressure, filtered oil system. Most painted and plated surfaces are believed to be original to the car, as are the upholstery and instrumentation.
With only limited use in recent years, this Nickel Era beauty has remained much the same as it was when it left the Locomobile factory a century ago, and it is considered to be one of the finest original Sportifs in existence.
