A very successful phoeni
A symbol of Ligier's renaissance on the international endurance scene, the JS P2 has been a success story from 2014 to 2016. This 001 chassis even won the LMP2 category of the 2015 world championship with the G-Drive team and is now part of the very closed circle of chassis with three participations in the 24 Hours of Le Mans!
You don't have to be a motorsport fanatic to know about Ligier. Along with Matra and Renault, the brand founded by Guy Ligier is one of those great names that have left their mark on the collective imagination. With the exploits of Jacques Laffite and its French blue livery, Ligier symbolised the revival of motor sport in the mid-1970s, before seeing its history put on hold after Olivier Panis' victory at the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix.
After a decade of retirement from motorsport, Guy Ligier returns to the business by teaming up with his friend Tico Martini to produce CN sports cars for gentlemen drivers. Among these racing drivers was a certain Jacques Nicolet. The rest of the story is well known: won over by Nicolet's dynamism, Guy Ligier offered him the chance to take over Ligier, thus allowing the brand to return to the international scene. As of 2014, Onroak Automotive's new LMP2 is named Ligier. Of course, this JS P2 takes on the historical initials of Jo Schlesser, the faithful friend with whom Guy Ligier competed, steering wheel in hand, in the 1967 Le Mans 24 Hours.
Anticipating the next LMP2 regulations, the JS P2 has a closed monocoque, contrarily to the Morgan that it replaces. After a tuning phase, the newcomer starts directly with a piece of bravery: the 24 Hours of Le Mans! This is the first time that the brand has participated in Le Mans since 1975. Guy Ligier was present at the test session and was overcome with emotion when Tristan Gommendy set the fastest lap in qualifying.
The JS P2 does not miss its entry. Already honed by numerous development sessions, chassis 001 is entrusted to the Brundle-Mardenborough-Shulzhitskiy team (race number 35) which dominates the LMP2 category. Only a recalcitrant spark plug deprived them of the victory and they were demoted to a bitter fifth place. Otherwise, the 002 chassis entered by TDS Racing finished on the second step of the podium in the LMP2 category and sixth overall!
It only took one race for Ligier to get back to the forefront of the scene. And this magnificent start was soon confirmed... In the hands of Roman Rusinov, Olivier Pla and Julien Canal, chassis 001 won its class at the 6 Hours of Fuji, during the 5th round of the World Endurance Championship, as well as the 6 Hours of Shanghai.
After such a warm-up, the 2015 season is one of consecration. The JS P2 starts the World Endurance Championship with two consecutive victories in the first two rounds of the World Championship. Chassis 001 started the season in the hands of the Nicolas-Merlin-Maris team until the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it finished 11th in its class.
It is then assigned to the G-Drive team. Roman Rusinov, Sam Bird and Julien Canal made good use of it: they won their class at the 6 Hours of Austin, the 6 Hours of Fuji as well as the 6 Hours of Bahrain, the championship final where the G-Drive trio won the LMP2 class drivers' title and G-Drive the team title!
The same chassis was leased in 2016 to the Greaves Motorsport team, which entered it in the ELMS and enabled it to take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the third time (10th overall and 6th in LMP2 with the Rojas-Canal-Berthon crew). That year, the Tequila Patron ESM team confirmed the vista of the JS P2 on the American continent by winning the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. A double win that only Ferrari had achieved in the same year. As a bonus, the American team even won Petit Le Mans!
