Inspired by the US Army's wartime 'Jeep', developed in haste and intended for short-term, small-scale production, the Land Rover would defy its creators' initial scepticism. Rover bosses, the Wilks brothers, saw the need for a tough, four-wheel-drive, utility vehicle to serve the needs of the agricultural community in the immediate post-war years, but the Land Rover's runaway success took the company by surprise. The necessity of using corrosion resistant aluminium panels at a time of severe steel shortage turned into a positive virtue in the Land Rover's sphere of operations, and the use of existing components kept production costs down and cut development time.

This handsome enthusiast owned 109” Land Rover was registered in January 1961 and presents well in grey coachwork with a beige interior that appears to be in good order, as is the canvas roof with roll up sides. This practical vehicle has three forward facing seats and six inward facing rear seats. Each is fitted with a seatbelt. There is also a towbar with electrics. Offered to auction with a V5C registration certificate and in spite of its exempt status by age an MoT test certificate valid until July 2025. The popularity of Land Rovers remains undiminished. This is especially true for a rare example like this. Consigned by Dominic Lake.
