Description
The Land Rover Defender was launched in 1948 and, incredibly, production only finished in January 2016 after a continuous run of 67 years. Outwardly, there is little to distinguish the post-1983 vehicles from the Series III Land Rover. A full-length bonnet, revised grille, plus the fitting of wheel arch extensions to cover wider-track axles are the most noticeable changes. Internally, coil springs offered a more comfortable ride and a permanent four-wheel drive system derived from the Range Rover featuring a two-speed transfer gearbox with a lockable centre differential. A modernised interior and a new series of progressively more powerful and modern engine characterised things under the skin. In line for the 2012 models was the installation of a different engine, Ford decided not to modify the engine introduced in 2007 and so the engine was replaced with the ZSD-422 engine, essentially a 2.2 litre variant of the same engine.
Sam Mendes, the director of both Skyfall and Spectre wanted a spectacular snow chase scene and turned to Jaguar Land Rover to assist. With the standard Land Rover 110 Defender deemed a bit too bland for a baddy's getaway car they turned to leading Land Rover modifiers, Bowler. The firm transformed 10 standard production, Santorini Black, crew-cab 110s into the SVX Concept or Spectre Defender. The cars featured huge 37-inch tyres, heavy-duty roll cages plus toughened suspensions with rose joints and Bilstein rally dampers. A hydraulic handbrake was installed, and its lever repositioned. The engine was tuned to give 180 bhp and Recaro seats fitted.
This fabulous evocation of one of the 10 cars that featured (and survived) in the James Bond film Spectre is presented correctly in black coach work with external roll cage, front winch, snorkel and expedition roof rack much like the original cars from the film. A 'correct' double cab example this XS specification car boasts air conditioning and electric windows and has been treated to new suede headlining and pop out modern entertainment system. Subject to a £10,000 recent renovation and sitting on full offroad tyres this example will look as incredible in Ascot high street as it would chasing a '00' down an alpine pass. Offered with low mileage, and just two former keepers not only is this a desirable evocation, alone it is also a desirable Land Rover. Consigned by Mathew Priddy
