Description
1962 Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato S2
In 1957, the Lancia Flaminia was introduced as the successor to the Aurelia. Lancia's new flagship model was available as a Coupé, Convertible & Saloon and was designed by Pinin Farina, Touring or Zagato. Notable for the Flaminia range is the fact that a lot more coupes were sold than saloons despite the higher selling price. The most coveted and limited edition coupé was the Sport Zagato. We are delighted to offer you another top specimen from this limited series.
The 2nd series Flaminia Sport Zagato is easily recognisable by its round straight headlights. It was a reworked version of the primal Flaminia Sport Zagato in order to comply with the new safety regulations that several countries were beginning to adopt. Other modifications remained limited so as to preserve aerodynamics and recognisable design.
Under the bonnet you still found the 2.5-litre V6 engine that was also used in the first series. A distinction was made between the 2.5L and the 2.5L 3C engines. This is because the '3C' designation referred to 'tre carburatori' or three Weber carburettors replacing a single Solex carburettor. An upgrade that provided a nice 30bhp extra in power.
The Flaminia Sport was and remains a dream car to drive. The refined and progressive Lancia technology combined with the streamlined aluminium Zagato bodywork translated into sporty performance. Weight distribution was optimal due to the transaxle gearbox located at the rear. The development and production of the Flaminia were expensive but the result was almost magical. Consequently, it was the few who could afford a feat of top-of-the-line engineering like the Flaminia Sport Zagato.
As 1 of 174 3C models built, this Flaminia Sport left the Zagato workshops in Milan on 21 December 1962. Hand-built by the craftsmen at Zagato in a timeless colour combination of Argento Auteuil Metallizzato (Silver Grey Metallic) over a black leather interior. Equipped with the 2.5L 3C V6 engine, this car could safely be described as a very classy and potent sports car.
On 15 January 1963, the Belgian Lancia distributor; Etn. Mannès, issued this Sport Zagato to its first owner in De Haan. As consul of Germany and coming from a wealthy family, Mr Decrop must have been as proud as a peacock when receiving his new car.
In the late 1970s, the car became the property of Mr Van Auwegem from Ghent. He was a 3rd generation Lancia concessionaire in the Ghent area. He got ownership of the Lancia through a swap deal. And whether he was overjoyed with this. He knew how unique it was to be able to get hold of 1 of only 11 Belgian-delivered 2.5L 3C models. The car remained owned by the family for many years. A fun fact; Mr Van Auwegem's father was one of the figures who founded Lancia Club Belgio.
In 2001, the last owner bought this Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato. By then, the car was no longer in its original silver-grey paint but was painted in red. A nice sporty colour combination that was also fitting for the Zagato design. Nevertheless, at the appropriate time, the owner decided to have the car restored back to its original colour combination.
After many enjoyable miles of driving, a full restoration was started in 2015. The car left for Italy to be restored by specialised workshops on behalf of the owner, after which the restoration was completed in 2017. Since this work, the car drove a limited number of kilometres. As a result, the car is still in very nice condition to this day. A fresh appearance ready to be enjoyed and a unique opportunity to own an original Belgian car that never left our small country....
