When the Lamborghini Miura burst onto the scene in 1966, it changed the face of high-performance motoring forever. While that model gradually evolved through ever more powerful iterations, it was only fitting that its replacement, the Countach, would fully embrace its predecessor’s spirit of revolution. Clean, crisp and angular, the Marcello Gandini-penned wedge caused a comparable commotion when the curtain first fell at the 1971 Geneva International Motor Show. By the time drivers and journalists had experienced the Countach’s raw 375-horsepower performance, the torch had truly been passed.
Just like the Miura, the Countach was improved over time, and while the clean lines and purity of design of the ‘Periscopio’ will always hold great appeal to collectors, the LP400 S added a welcome injection of aggression on its debut in 1978. Hitting the road four years after the LP400, the revised model featured even wider Pirelli rubber housed behind blistered wheel arches, with new suspension geometry to complement the more aggressive stance.
Of the 237 LP400 S built, the earliest Series I variants with Campagnolo Bravo "teledial" wheels are the most collectable. Chassis 1121028 is the 14th of this sequence to be built, and was completed on 26 October 1978 in the striking colour combination of Blu Notte Metallizzato over a Bianco interior. It is believed to be the only of its type to leave Sant’Agata in this shade, and one of the very few early cars equipped with the iconic SW dashboard gauges, carried over from the LP400 ‘Periscopio’.
After resurfacing in Munich in 2001, then finished in red, the Countach was exported to Finland before being placed into storage, where it remained until being sold at auction in 2016. Still fitted with its matching-numbers engine, the car was treated to a full restoration in Modena that was overseen by former Lamborghini chief test driver, Valentino Balboni. The extensive rebuild included a return to its original and highly desirable colour combination.
While the unique colour is remarkable, the most notable aspect of this stunning Countach LP400 S is in fact the quality of the restoration, which was carried out to a very high standard under the supervision of a Lamborghini legend. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/pa23.
