Description
Chassis No. D11419
Engine No. D3150
Originally produced in early 1935, factory records indicate that this Lagonda Rapier was fitted with a closed Coupe body by Abbott. While the earliest history of this example is unknown by 1951 it was under the ownership of a founding member of the Rapier Registry when it was recorded to feature a two-seater tourer body. After finding a new home in England around 1980, it was then raced extensively in Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) events between 1986 and 1991 where it would compete at Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Castle Combe, and prestigious hillclimbs.
Following this period of racing, it was subsequently treated to a full restoration by Lagonda specialists Bishopgray of Berkshire in 2005 for which a large number of restoration invoices are available. Exceeding $200,000, this comprehensive restoration included new alloy boat-tail bodywork inspired by a Brooklands racer with twin-folding aero screens. In addition to every aspect of the car receiving complete restoration attention, the engine was specially upgraded and equipped with a supercharger to produce an impressive 110-horsepower, which was undoubtedly enjoyed during its participation on the 2012 California Mille.
After the California Mille, the engine was fully rebuilt by Phil Reilly & Co. in 2013 with substantial efforts made to improve reliability and performance, including a reworked oiling system, rebuilt oil and water pumps, and new camshafts. Following these improvements, the engine was operated and tuned on an engine dyno. The balance of the car was also gone over with a transmission and rear axle reseal, suspension sorting, and various other parts replaced as needed at a cost of approximately $57,000. Once completed, this car was enjoyed for several years before it was acquired by a Long Island, New York based collector who enjoyed this stunning example touring the Hamptons. Acquired more recently by a respected collector, this potent Sports Special offers exceptional history, sporting vintage looks, and is available to compete in a number of the world's most desirable touring events, in which it would surely be an absolute delight to drive.
