Description
The brilliantly designed Jaguar XK120 needs little introduction – its dashing good looks and published 120 mph top speed provided all that most early buyers needed to know. According to a history compiled by a previous owner, this XK120 was held by five New York resident owners from new, until it was acquired by Mark Smith in 2013.
Contained within copies of 1960-dated newsletters from various New York State automobile clubs on file, it is evident that the Jaguar’s second owner, Bob Phillips, made several visual enhancements to the car. Amazingly, they remain in place to this day. The interior’s kick panels and door cards have been pleated in tan leather in the same pattern as the seat cushions, and engine-turned aluminum panels have been added to the outer panels of the dashboard. A Moto-Lita-style steering wheel further accents the custom look. The trunk has been similarly lined with pleated leather and the chromed tool kit has been put on permanent display on the trunk floor in a custom-sewn clear-plastic holder. A caption in one of the newsletters in which it appeared, states that the Jaguar had won most of the 20 concours it had entered.
Offered with its stock steering wheel modified with engine-turned spokes, and side curtains in their canvas pouch, this uniquely outfitted XK120 offers a beautifully preserved glimpse into how many show-winning entries were prepared over 60 years ago. It would certainly be a thrill to introduce it to a new generation of enthusiasts.
