Forerunner of the marque Jaguar from SS Cars Ltd of Coventry, the SS1 predated yet epitomized the later advertising slogan, Grace, Space, Pace. SS originally stood for the Swallow Sidecar & Coachbuilding Company, which had been founded in Blackpool, England by William Walmsley in 1922. The company branched out into motor manufacture in 1926. The SS1 was launched in October 1931 with a low under-slung chassis designed by Willliam Lyons. Lyons design for the body was startling: the SS1s excessively long bonnet, tiny passenger compartment and helmet-type front wings suggesting that it represented the ultimate in high performance. In so doing, the SS1 went some way towards establishing the pattern for future Jaguars, combining sporting good looks with a better-than-average specification and all at a bargain price.
This 1934 Jaguar SS1 Tourer is a rare and exciting matching numbers car just out of a large collection. Purchased April 23rd 1934 by Jerome Taishoff at Henlys of England. Still wearing its original registration plate SNG 443 along with its rear French Transfer plate used to ship the car to the United States in 1939 as the Conflict in Europe was heating up. $40,000 documented engine rebuild (inclusive of: Radiator; Chemically cleaned, pressure checked, acid washed, flash dried, Gas tank; Removed & blasted, Engine hot tanked/magnafluxed, Mk V crank (3.5), Freshly cast 20hp head done in Australia, .020 connecting rods bearings "big end bearings", Dual row timing chain, Thrust washer conversion, High volume oil pump, Diamond pistons, ARP Head studs and Ferrea valves) original head and parts included and recently driven 750+ miles reliably. Recent servicing including fluids, New Blockley tires and original friction shock rebuild.
Comes complete with hood sides, weather gear, Heritage Certificate and a thick folder of receipts and correspondence. A very original car with correct hardware and gauges etc. It's a fast example, almost a "hot rod", which is happy at 55-60 mph on the flats. Recent winner at the Radford Concours as well as JCNA Concours at the Vanderbilt Long Island. Very rare in its condition with only 30 survivors left around the world.
