A true star of the 1960s and 1970s, a sports car adored by actors, wealthy heirs and amateur drivers, affectionately nicknamed "The Shoe" because of the disproportionate size of its bonnet, described as "the most beautiful car in the world" by Enzo Ferrari, the size at that time in terms of European sports cars; the Jaguar Type E is no longer presented. If beauty is subjective in everyone's eyes, the first series to leave the Coventry factory in 1961 remains one of the most desirable, a true standard bearer of the image of the E Type in the collective imagination.
The car we present to you is a Type E series 1 OTS for Open Two Seaters (Ca-briolet) delivered new in 1965 in Texas, it was very quickly imported in Europe and, a rare thing, it does not have the American safety features that can spoil the aesthetics of the bodywork. The presence of the original Hard-Top is a real asset because its original cost was exorbitant and customers were simply satisfied with the bonnet. While the Hard Top remains in its original condition and requires a change of joints, the car underwent an aesthetic and mechanical restoration in 2019 and 2020.
Bought at auction in 2019 in good condition but requiring bodywork, paintwork and upholstery touch-ups, the current owner had the brake system restored and overhauled for a total of €1,960, fitted an electronic ignition and carried out a complete dismantling of the front axle, changing the silent-blocks, front and rear shock absorbers, bleeding the water circuit and fitting an electric fan for over €5,000.
The major mechanical work was carried out in March 2020 with an engine and gearbox removal, an engine tuning, a clutch kit, a repair of the rev counter for a total of 3 532 €.
For driving comfort, he installed an electric power steering system, on the aesthetic side, he replaced the gear lever bellows, the interior rear-view mirror and the centre of the steering wheel, he also had the original upholstery cleaned. The soft top is in almost new condition, it has recently been replaced as well as its black leatherette soft top cover, you will appreciate its original wooden steering wheel which has been cleaned and varnished. All this quality work was carried out at Garage Lan-dra in Vence in the Maritime Alps.
Today the car is in a beautiful aesthetic and mechanical condition, its original configuration, its thick file of invoices and booklets of the period as well as its hard-top make it a desirable and atypical Type E on historic rallies and rallies with an inimitable driving pleasure and line. A piece of English motor industry history that is a must in any collection.
