Description
After winning Le Mans in 1951 and 1953 with the legendary XK 120C, also known as the C-Type, the famous Coventry brand returned to the Sarthe in 1954 with the newly developed and totally futuristic looking D-Type. After achieving 2nd place in its debut year, the very aerodynamic and drop-dead-beautiful racing car with its 260 horsepower from the legendary 3.4 litre inline 6 cylinder cleanly swept the board in this most prestigious event in 1955, 1956 and 1957. Original D-Types are not only exceedingly rare and eye wateringly expensive. With their iconic status, their beautiful shape and all the racing success it is no surprise that, from the 70s, a number of replicas were built in varying quality. Probably the best replica was constructed by Jim Marlands company “Copycats” founded in 1982 which, in 1987, was renamed “Proteus”. Using Jaguar engines and gearboxes sourced from historic vehicles, a proper tubular frame chassis was constructed and clothed in an absolutely perfectly replicated aluminium body. Only around 40 of those carefully assembled cars were completed until 2007. Our example is equipped with the technical bits of a 1962 Jaguar Mark 2 3.8 litre but the engine received - as per original - a set of 3 twin choke Weber carburettors. In 1990 the still as-new recreation was acquired by a Swiss collector and after importation to Switzerland used for occasional outings at historic racing events. In 2008 the D type was passed on to another collector who only used the car sparingly. Recently the car, after a longer period of inactivity, was carefully re-commissioned by specialists from the Graber Sports Garage. All systems were checked and, where necessary, brought up to scratch. Receipts for the purchase, maintenance and repair since 1990 are available and will be handed over with the car. Since its completion the Proteus has only covered 3’150 miles and consequently present itself in outstanding condition. Painted in classic British racing green with a green leather interior and with only two owners since 1990, this D-Type recreation present a unique opportunity to acquire a most faithful copy of a Le Mans racing legend combined with a Swiss road registration! The last veteran MOT was completed in June 2015.
