"In 1985, at the Geneva Motor Show, the four-wheel drive Sierra XR4x4 was shown as a derivative of the XR4i. It had two viscous differentials with two thirds of the power directed towards the rear wheels. It was originally available only as a three-door hatchback; the bodywork had the large single-piece rear windows rather than the design with an additional pillar as used on the XR4. The XR4x4 had a single rear spoiler instead of the distinctive bi-plane unit used on the XR4 but did receive unique alloy wheels. A five-door version was added soon thereafter. The four-wheel drive allowed for an extra margin of security on slick or snowy roads, while retaining the car's rear-wheel drive comportment. The XR4x4 originally came equipped with the 2.8 litre Cologne V6 engine but it was replaced in 1989 by the new more efficient 2.9 litre Cologne V6 engine, with Electronic fuel injection.
This wonderfully kept and original example presented in red coachwork with contrasting grey velour trim was first registered on 11th January 1993 making it one of the last to roll off the production line. With just four former keepers; the first being the Ford Motor Company in Brentford and the following three detailed in the history file, this example is offered with an MoT test certificate valid until July 2021, V5C registration document and original book pack. These four-wheel drive Sierras are rare and becoming increasingly more desirable to those who remember them so fondly, and this is a fabulous example.
