As part of the Ford Motor Company centennial celebration, the company debuted the retro-styled GT. A modern homage to Ford’s racing heritage, the GT celebrated the highly successful GT40 program of the 1960s, which won Le Mans an impressive four consecutive years from 1966 to 1969. Exceedingly popular since its debut, the GT went into production for the 2005 and 2006 model years, during which time only 4,033 examples were built.
In addition to the stunning design, the Ford GT featured impressive performance, the likes of which had not been seen from a production car built in Detroit. Powered by a 5.4-liter DOHC V-8 engine and equipped with a Lysholm twin-screw supercharger, the GT is rated at 550 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a Ricardo six-speed manual transmission featuring a helical limited-slip differential. This driveline allows the Ford GT to achieve a 205-mph top speed and 0–60 sprint of 3.3 seconds. These extraordinary performance figures put the car in competition with other supercars of the time, such as the Porsche Carrera GT and the Mercedes-McLaren SLR. In 2005, 2,022 examples of the celebrated Ford GT were produced.
Amazingly, this Ford GT has been preserved for the last 18 years in near-factory condition. One of the first 100 produced and completed at the factory in October 2004, it has been driven 260.6 miles from new at time of cataloguing and presents in virtually as-new condition inside and out. Exceedingly rare, the car on offer is one of 15 cars built for 2005 finished in Speed Yellow with full stripes with standard wheels. Two options were selected at the time of purchase: full stripes and a McIntosh stereo. The Ford will be accompanied by a car cover, tire pump, books, and a window sticker.
One of Ford’s most exciting products thus far into the 21st century, the success of the 2005–2006 GT undoubtedly helped inspire Ford executives to revive the GT just in time to win its class at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, 50 years after the first GT secured the first victory for an American manufacturer at the event. Highly sought-after, this rare Speed Yellow example presents an amazing opportunity to purchase a like-new 2005 Ford GT—a perfect stablemate to an original GT40 or the new GT of today. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/am23.
