The “a bit older” car enthusiasts among us will probably still remember: the Mexico Cup on the Zandvoort circuit in 1973. “Ordinary” street cars that did not shy away from a real “door handle” competition, and provided a lot of spectacle. All drivers with an equivalent Ford Escort 1600 GT Mexico were able to show that their driver skills were the best.

Now in 2023 we have here a Mexico (everyone knows which brand and type we mean) that has survived the racing battle well and has now been reincarnated into a historic rally car. Fortunately, the old Dutch license plate has always been preserved, and the additional numbers on the other cars are clearly visible at the photos of that time. A nice piece of valuable history. In 1976 the Escort also took part in the famous Tulpenrally.

The man behind this Escort is multiple rally champion Erwin Doctor, and nowadays known for his specialty in the construction and preparation of Escorts Mk1 and Mk2, intended for historic rallying. In addition to the bodywork processed down to bare sheet metal, reinforced, welded and subsequently dipped in an anti-corrosion bath, the entire technique has also been renewed and where necessary overhauled and improved.

An brief summery of what has been done:

-Engine built by “Summer Motorsport”. It is a 1750 cc with duel Weber carburetors, including a fast camshaft and electronic ignition and produces approximately 140 bhp.

-Gearbox is standard, completely overhauled and equipped with hydraulic clutch

-Banjo rear axle with limited slip differential.

-Adjustable pedal box from RS1600 (cylinders mounted on the box)

-Aluminum radiator.

-Electrical wiring system made by Multiteck, being the specialist for this kind of work. With fuses and relays mounted on the center console

-Electronic Instruments from “Racetech”

-Front suspension Bilstein GP1 with 190lbs front springs.

-Rear leaf springs 145lbs with Bilstein dampers.

-Interior is fully upholstered. What is mandatory for competing in road rallies in England.

-Safety features 6-point roll cage.

-Cobra rally seats (adjustable) mounted on heavy bars.

-Schroth 4-point harnesses with electric key.

-Brantz-pro trip master with driver display.

-Revolution 8-spoke rims 6×13 with Vredestein tires 175/70R13

-Cibie spot and wide beams, quick release.

-Lucas reversing lamp.

-Aluminium fuel tank with 50 liter capacity and equipped with fuel gauge and pump.

-Trunk is equipped with spare wheel with accessories and parts box.

-Battery is placed in the boot, complete with main switch.

De wat oudere autoliefhebbers onder ons zullen het zich waarschijnlijk nog wel kunnen herinneren: de Mexico Cup op het circuit van Zandvoort in 1973. “Gewone” straatauto’s die een echte ”deurklinken” wedstrijd niet uit de weg gingen, en voor veel spektakel zorgden. Anno 2023 hebben we hier een Mexico (iedereen weet dan welke merk en type we bedoelen) die de strijd destijds goed heeft overleeft en inmiddels is gereïncarneerd tot historische rallyauto. Gelukkig is het oude Nederlandse kenteken altijd bewaard gebleven, en op de foto’s van destijds zijn op de andere auto’s de opeenvolgende nummers goed te zien. Een mooi stukje bewaarde historie. In 1976 heeft de Escort overigens ook nog deel genomen aan de befaamde Tulpenrally.

Naast de tot op het kale plaatwerk bewerkte, verstevigde, doorgelaste en naderhand in een anti-corrosie bad gedompelde carrosserie, is ook de complete techniek vernieuwd en waar nodig aangepast een verbeterd.

-Motor gebouwd bij “Zomer Motorsport”. Het betreft een 1750 cc met dubbele Weber carburateurs, met o.a. een snelle nokkenas en elektronische ontsteking en ongeveer 140 pk levert.

-Versnellingsbak is standaard, compleet gereviseerd en voorzien van hydraulische koppeling

-Banjo achteras met sperdifferentieel.

-Afstelbare pedalbox van RS1600 (cilinders aan de box gemonteerd)

-Aluminium radiator.

-Elektrische bedrading gemaakt door Multiteck, zijnde dé specialist op dit gebied. Met zekeringen en relais op het middenconsole gemonteerd

-Elektronische Instrumenten van “Racetech”

-Voorwielophanging Bilstein GP1 met 190lbs voorveren.

-Achter bladveren 145lbs met Bilstein dempers.

-Interieur is volledig gestoffeerd. Wat verplicht is i.v.m. eventuele deelname aan roadrallys in Engeland.
