Description
Chassis No. ZFFSG17A2L0085938
Few cars have personified a point in time the way the Ferrari Testarossa perfectly captured the excess of the 1980s. Its glorious, deeply-recessed side intakes, menacing louvered rear end, and outrageously wide stance were the work of Leonardo Fioravanti, whose brief was to create a radical yet refined successor to the 365 GT4 BB. Unlike the Boxer which was not sold new in the United States, the Testarossa was conceived as a world-market car from the outset and was therefore designed to be a well-rounded and overall more livable supercar.
Development began with an overhaul of its predecessor's longitudinally-mounted 4.9-liter 12-cylinder engine and radiator hosing, which now pumped out a production car record 380-horsepower while alleviating the hot cabin conditions of the Boxer. Inside, Connolly Autolux leather trimmed the spacious, ergonomic interior which featured air conditioning as standard. The biggest step over its predecessor and the competing Lamborghini Countach was its slippery shape which did without a rear spoiler and sported a sculpted aerodynamic front end. Wide, light-alloy five-spoke wheels completed this potent package and made room for large, ventilated servo-assisted disc brakes.
Continuous improvements in the years following its release saw a revised suspension, steering column, shocks, and brakes to accommodate new five-bolt wheels for 1988, as well as the introduction of a modern KE-Jetronic fuel injection in 1989. This desirable late-production Testarossa, chassis number 85938, comes from the penultimate model year of the original Testarossa. As such, it benefits from numerous technical and ergonomic upgrades while retaining the unaltered Fioravanti-penned design. Built in May 1990, this is a left-hand drive, U.S.-market car finished in Rosso Corsa over Crema/Testa di Moro (Cream/Brown) leather and Testa di Moro carpets.
An Illinois Non-Resident Drive Away Permit on file records the original owner as Dr. Anthony E. Miller of Carmel, Indiana, who took delivery of his new Ferrari at Lake Forest Sports Cars (now Ferrari Lake Forest) in Lake Forest, Illinois. The accompanying clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report resumes the car's known history with its initial entry in 2001, placing the Ferrari in Indiana with a mere 72 miles at the time. Subsequent entries suggest the car remained an object of admiration rather than a mode of transportation over the following decade, showing just 515 miles by 2010. Today, the Testarossa is offered with just 10 additional miles traveled over the last 15 years, for a total three-digit original mileage of just 525 miles. A major engine-out belt service to address the car's extremely limited use was conducted in January 2025 by North Coast Exotics Inc. As a further testament to its incredible preservation, it is also accompanied by its owner's manuals in their leather folio, spare, and like-new tool and jack kits.
With its exceptional time capsule presentation, this is likely one of the finest preservation-grade Testarossas extant, making it an ideal preservation class entrant in concours or Ferrari Club of America events. Wherever it is displayed, this Testarossa will stand as a reference for the model and a crowning addition to any collection of low-mileage Ferraris.
