From his earliest days leading the Grand Prix titans of the Alfa Romeo stable to the final, game-changing supercar launched shortly before his death, Enzo Ferrari was resolutely committed to creating world-beating machines. Whether sitting at the pinnacle of motorsport or within the pages of magazine centrefolds, cars that wore the Prancing Horse represented the very cutting edge of technology and style. Fitting, then, that the car built in his honour—the Ferrari Enzo—would exemplify everything that had seen the Maranello marque grow from a boutique producer of sports racers to one of the most coveted and desirable badges in automotive history.
Like the great halo models that came before, the Enzo was created to push the envelope of road car performance, utilising technology derived from the top-flight of motorsport and otherworldly styling from long-term partner Pininfarina. Constructed from lightweight carbon fibre and aluminium, the Enzo’s advanced chassis was clothed in composite bodywork styled by the carrozzeria’s Ken Okuyama and shaped by wind-tunnel testing. Influenced by the firm’s leading grand prix cars, the rakish nose struck a tone carried over to the rest of the coachwork, with subtle ground-effect aerodynamics and a small active spoiler in place of its predecessor, the F50’s, outrageous rear wing.
At the Enzo’s heart lay an all-new, mid-mounted, 5,998-cc V-12 engine capable of producing a staggering 651 horsepower—greater than the output of any of its rivals. But it wasn’t just the headline power figure that impressed, but how it was delivered, with an addictive combination of low-down torque, the aggressive snap of acceleration with each shift of the paddles, and the dizzying howl as the needle approaches the 8,200 rpm redline. Like its top-of-the-range forebears, the Enzo set a new benchmark for performance and design, and, due to a production run that numbered just 400 examples, has since become one of the preeminent collector cars of the modern era.
With its landmark performance, modern styling and hugely advanced powertrain, the Enzo is a technological tour de force that would take pride of place in any collection of modern hypercars. And while many buyers opted for the classic Rosso Corsa combination that evoked the spirit of its predecessors, others chose to take the road less travelled when it came to colour. Chassis 128786 is one such example, and was ordered new in the striking combination of Nero over a Pelle Nera interior. More stealth fighter than Red Arrow, the Enzo was further configured with practical large-sized racing seats, and contrasting Rosso instruments and harnesses.
Construction of the Ferrari began on 11 February 2003, and on 17 March of that year the Enzo rumbled out of the Maranello workshops under its own power. Destined for France, the car was delivered new via long-term Ferrari concessionaire Charles Pozzi SA to its first owner in May 2004. Six years after leaving Maranello, the Enzo was certified by Ferrari Classiche, receiving its coveted “Red Book” in December 2009.
The car is believed to have spent most of its life on the Côte d'Azur in the care of just two owners, receiving its first service at Auto Palace S.A., Cannes in March 2009. Its next service was carried out by Monaco Motors in August 2011, and in September 2014 the car received a raft of maintenance work at official Ferrari dealer Riller & Schnauk in Berlin; accompanying invoices amount to more than €16,000. The Enzo received two further services from Monaco Motors in May 2019 and September 2021. On 2 November 2022, the Enzo received €30,000-worth of maintenance at SF Côte d'Azur, Cannes that included a full service, replacement of the clutch, and a new exhaust silencer.
For the Maranello faithful, the growing interest in the Ferrari Enzo will come as no surprise. Not only is it one of the most technologically advanced hypercars of its generation, it is also a landmark model for the Modena firm. And while each of the 400 is special, those finished in such rare and desirable colour combinations as this Nero over Nera example are justifiably the most collectable of all.
