When Ferrari reintroduced front-engine grand touring cars with the Pininfarina-designed 550 Maranello in 1996, demand for a convertible version was immediate. Though customers were thrilled with the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina, many felt limited by the lack of a conventional convertible top and only used their cars for quick out-and-back jaunts in the summertime. Looking to solve this issue for the convertible variant of the 550’s successor, the 575M Maranello, Ferrari devised the most interesting aspect of the Superamerica: the “Revocromico” rotating hardtop. Equipped with an opacity adjustable, electrochromic glass roof, the first of its kind fitted to a production car, the Superamerica could be transformed into a convertible at the press of a button. Ferrari chose to produce just 559 examples, and every car was spoken for within weeks of its announcement.
Showing less than 3,600 miles when catalogued, this Superamerica certainly ranks among the most desirably specified examples in existence. Standing apart from its many Rosso-clad siblings, this example is finished in handsome Nero over Nero leather trim with contrasting red stitching. Other options include the coveted Daytona-style seats, interior carbon trim package, red painted brake calipers, yellow tachometer, and Scuderia fender shields. A set of owner’s manuals and service books accompany the sale. Importantly, the Superamerica was treated to a timing belt and fluid service in May 2023 by North Coast Exotics of Cleveland, Ohio.
Already proving to be highly collectable, the 575 Superamerica represents the modern, open-top V-12 Ferrari at its best, with exquisite bodywork, the inimitable Revocromico rotating hardtop, and incredible performance, yet still comfortable and versatile enough for extended touring. Sporting desirable options and a coveted specification, this example will forever remain one of the most coveted of Ferrari’s front-engine, rear-wheel-drive V-12 grand tourers.
