The ultimate iteration of Ferrari’s fabled Berlinetta Boxer, the 512 BBi was introduced in 1981, adding fuel injection to a beloved staple of Ferrari’s model range. Other than the BBi’s new fuel injection, it remained largely identical to its carbureted predecessor, with just 1,007 examples built with chassis numbers ranging from 38121 to 52935, according to Ferrari’s website. Performance was brisk, with a sprint from 0-100 km/h possible in just under five seconds leading to a top speed of 280 km/h.
Completed by the factory in November of 1983, chassis number 48175 was originally outfitted just as you see it today, resplendent in Ferrari’s traditional Rosso Corsa over a Pelle Nera interior. While not much is known of the car’s prior history, it was certified by Ferrari Classiche in 2015, confirming it retains its original chassis, engine, and gearbox.
After being acquired by the current custodians, the car was shipped to Maranello, Italy, where it was entrusted to a handful of well-known marque experts for a mechanical and cosmetic refreshening. This work sought to return the car to ensure it is factory correct throughout, even in the smallest of details, to make for a truly exemplary 512 BBi. Work on the car’s bodywork was entrusted to Sport Cars di Giusti Giacomo in Modena. This included removing and refurbishing the front and rear bumpers, repainting the grilles in the rear clam, refinishing the engine bay to its factory-correct finish, amongst other minor work, all totalling to just over €18,500. In addition to this, the car also received an engine-out major service, which included replacement of the cam belts, clutch replacement, and an engine rebuild.
With 2024 marking forty years since the final year of Berlinetta Boxer production, it is certain that the model will see renewed attention from the market and a greater sense of nostalgia from many enthusiasts. Considered by many to be one of Ferrari and Pininfarina’s prettiest designs, a 512 BBi is a joy to drive and enjoy, perfectly suited for spirited drives or long-distance touring. Considering its recent mechanical and cosmetic work completed by marque specialists, this example surely will not disappoint.
