Née en 1972 sous la forme de la 365 GT4 2+2, la Ferrari 400 réaffirmait la volonté de Ferrari de rivaliser avec les meilleures sportives de luxe du monde. Elle a connu une carrière particulièrement longue, sans doute grâce à un dessin intemporel signé Pininfarina. Son habitacle spacieux, confortable, luxueusement fini et tendu de cuir jusqu'au ciel de toit, fait d’elle une formidable GT prête à affronter les longues distances. Son moteur 12-cylindres lui confère une sportivité et un agrément de conduite encore jamais vus sur une GT de sa catégorie. Elle a été proposée en diverses déclinaisons, à carburateurs et injection, la dernière étant la 412 au catalogue jusqu'en 1989. Conçue surtout pour le marché américain, elle était généralement équipée d'une boîte automatique.

Ce n'est pas le cas de la 400 i que nous proposons, une des rares dotées d'une boîte mécanique : elle fait partie des 421 exemplaires produits en boîte manuelle. Cette auto a été livrée neuve en 1980 au garage Auto Becker, à Düsseldorf, en Allemagne. Elle sera ensuite exportée vers la côte ouest des Etats-Unis sans doute au milieu des années 1980. Notre 400 i aurait même appartenu à Robert Petersen, fondateur du musée automobile éponyme en Californie. Elle sera ensuite réimportée en Europe en 2009. Acquise en 2015 par son actuel propriétaire, elle a depuis bénéficié d’une importante restauration. Ainsi, sa carrosserie a été repeinte dans sa teinte d’origine Marrone Colorado. Sous le capot, les éléments mécaniques tels que les cache-culbuteurs ont également été repeints. L'intérieur a lui aussi bénéficié d’une restauration, les cuirs des sièges, du tableau de bord ou encore du ciel de toit ont tous été remplacés. Son volant Nardi à jante bois est en très bon état, tout comme le placage bois de la console centrale. Les moquettes ont elles aussi bénéficié d’une restauration. Au niveau mécanique, on notera que son embrayage a été remplacé en 2016 chez le spécialiste Calderoni et que, plus récemment, son train avant a bénéficié d’une restauration complète. Au final près de 38 000 € ont été dépensés ces dernières années pour la restauration de cette auto. Avec son élégante configuration et sa boite manuelle notre bel exemplaire ne manque pas d’arguments, et il ne fait aucun doute qu’il saura séduire les passionnés du cheval cabré.

Born in 1972 as the 365 GT4 2+2, the Ferrari 400 reaffirmed Ferrari's desire to compete with the best luxury sports cars in the world. It had a particularly long career, no doubt thanks to a timeless design by Pininfarina. Its spacious, comfortable and luxuriously finished interior, covered with leather up to the roof, makes it a formidable GT car ready to face long distances. Its 12-cylinder engine gives it a sportiness and driving pleasure never seen before in a GT car of its class. It was offered in numerous variants, with carburetors and fuel injection, the last one being the 412 which was in the catalog until 1989. Designed mainly for the American market, it was generally equipped with an automatic transmission.

This is not the case of the 400 i we are offering, one of the few with a mechanical gearbox: it is one of the 421 cars produced with a manual gearbox. This car was delivered new in 1980 to the Auto Becker garage in Düsseldorf, Germany. It was then exported to the West Coast of the United States, probably in the mid-1980s. Our 400 i would even have belonged to Robert Petersen, founder of the eponymous car museum in California. It was then re-imported to Europe in 2009. Acquired in 2015 by its current owner, it has since benefited from an important restoration. Thus, its body has been repainted in its original Marrone Colorado color. Under the hood, mechanical elements such as rocker covers have also been repainted. The interior has also been restored, the leather of the seats, the dashboard and the roof lining have all been replaced. Its Nardi steering wheel with wood rim is in very good condition, as well as the wood veneer of the center console. The carpets have also been restored. Mechanically, we note that its clutch was replaced in 2016 at the specialist Calderoni and that, more recently, its front axle has benefited from a complete restoration. In the end nearly 38,000 € have been spent in recent years for the restoration of this car. With its elegant configuration and manual gearbox, our beautiful example does not lack arguments, and there is no doubt that it will seduce prancing horse enthusiasts.
