One of the last Ferraris to be engineered and launched during company founder Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime, the 328 series replaced the immensely popular 308 series in 1985. While still featuring Maranello’s transverse mid-mounted Dino V-8 engine, the new model sported extensive performance and aesthetic upgrades.

Designers at Pininfarina carefully balanced aesthetics with emerging research into drag coefficients and aerodynamic lift while staying true to Ferrari’s design language. Designer Leonardo Fioravanti’s original wedge profile was softened with a redesigned nose complemented by a matching tail valance. Bumpers were painted body color to blend with the valance panels and further modernize the design. Gone were the exhaust air louvers behind the retractable headlights, replaced with a larger front radiator air louvre spanning the lower third of the hood.

Its predecessor’s all-aluminum, naturally aspirated Dino V-8 engine was enlarged to 3.2 liters and fitted with a sophisticated Marelli electronic ignition system while retaining its bulletproof Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection system. An antilock brake system was added to the four-wheel ventilated disc brakes in 1988, further improving drivability for the car’s final year of production.

The improved engine was good for a claimed 270 horsepower and capable of launching the car to 60 mph in under 6 seconds. Available as either a “Gran Turismo Berlinetta” closed coupe or “Gran Turismo Spider” with a targa-style removable roof panel, the 328 proved to be among Ferrari’s most popular models, with nearly 20,000 examples produced before being superseded by the 348 in 1989.

Presented in the traditional combination of Rosso Corsa over Beige leather upholstery, this 328 Gran Turismo Spider was delivered to F.A.F Motorscars of Tucker, Georgia by Ferrari in July of 1989 and sold soon after to an individual in the Atlanta suburbs. Showing 4,408 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloguing, the Ferrari is accompanied by a collection of service invoices. Significantly, a document dated to 2015 indicates the car received the important cambelt service at the Ferrari Maserati dealership in Montreal, Canada. In April 2016, it received its Ferrari Certificate of Authenticity, and its Ferrari Classiche Red Book confirms the presence of its numbers-matching engine and gearbox. More recently in 2021, the front lower suspension forks were replaced. The car is additionally accompanied by a warranty booklet, owner’s manual, and Blaupunkt radio manual.

Ferrari 328s are now getting the respect they deserve and as such their values continue to climb. Marque enthusiasts will be hard-pressed to find a more appealing example than this low-mileage, well-preserved 328 in quintessential Ferrari colors. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo24/.
