One of the last Ferraris to be engineered and launched during company founder Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime, the 328 series replaced the immensely popular 308 series in 1985.
Ferrari launched the 328 GTB and GTS alongside a renewed Mondial at the 1985 Frankfurt Auto Show.
Updated to reflect advances in aerodynamics, the Leonardo Fioravanti-penned bodywork—styled by Pininfarina and built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti—offered a modern and attractive interpretation of the 308 platform, with the added benefit of increased performance from an enlarged 3.2-litre V-8 and a five-speed manual gearbox.
As with the 308 before it, the 328 was available as a closed Berlinetta or as an open Spyder with a removable roof panel.
Production of the 328 lasted until 1989.
Between 1986 and 1989, just over 6000 examples were built and with the recent dramatic increase in collectability of these cars, has quickly become one of the most sought-after models of the 308/328 family.
By Ferrari standards, the 328 is considered to be one of the most reliable and usable offerings from Maranello. Not least because most maintenance and servicing jobs could be carried out without dropping the engine from the car.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
This striking “Gran Turismo Spider” is attractively finished in its factory colours, not often seen, of Grigio Metallizzato Ferrari with e Pelle Beige interior.
This example of a 328 GTS was delivered to the supplying dealer, Symbol Car Spa in Torino, Italy, the 31st of July 1987 and sold to its first owner in Borgaro Torinese.
The car was later sold to Mr. Ugo Colombo, an important Ferrari collector in Milan, who carefully preserved the Ferrari for several years.
Mr. Colombo is very well known for his pioneering role in the development of Miami’s bayfront skyline and for acquired ‘The Collection’, one of the top performing luxury car dealerships in the United States.
The 328 GTS, received its Ferrari Certificate of Authenticity, and its Ferrari Classiche Red Book confirms the presence of its numbers-matching engine and gearbox and other correct details.
More recently in July 2024, the Ferrari was subject to a €4,546 service at Ferrari dealer Ineco, Modena, in which the timing belts were changed.
The 328 GTS remained registered in Italy until January 2025.
The car is complete with original books and leather pouch.
CONDITION EXTERIOR
We have seen and driven many Ferrari 328’s but this is certainly one of a kind. The condition of the car is impressively nice. It starts with the beautiful color combination which luckily isn’t the standard red but desirable Grigio Metallizzato.
The vibrant Dark Grey paintwork shines extremely beautiful and accentuates its timeless design nicely.
The paint is with no evidence of damage or hasty repairs. Body lines are of factory-quality, and the removable targa roof is in a very nice condition.
From top to bottom, this appears to be a straight, honest and original car that has been very well maintained and cared for from day one.
The wheels are in as new condition even as the windows which don’t show very minor signs of use.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The interior shows minimal usage, with only some very minor visual wear to the driver’s seat.
It is equipped with the desirable five-speed transmission, Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette system and full leather upholstery.
Also the carpets, dash, and switchgear are in excellent condition and all the meters as well as the gauges are working properly.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
A 328 GTS in this gorgeous colour combination is rare.
This specific example is due to its latest service a fantastic driver.
The handling is excellent, actually what you expect from a Ferrari. The steering is very direct even as braking etc.
The gearbox is shifting very nicely without any synchromesh noises.
As younger generations of collectors enter the market, the interest in these classic Ferraris is bound to increase.
For the collectors looking for their first Ferrari, a 328 GTS is an excellent choice, considering its performance, styling, and reliability, and its service costs that won’t break the bank.
With full 'Red Book' Ferrari Classiche certification and still benefiting from the full service by a well-regarded marque specialist in Italy in 2024, this iconic model would be an ideal addition to any collection.
