Ferrari used the Paris Salon of 1964 to introduce its replacement for the long-running 250 GT platform. Utilising the latest update of the Colombo short-block V-12, which was now enlarged to displace 3.3 litres, the new 275 series once again deployed a short-wheelbase 2,400-milimetre chassis and was offered in two forms: a race-worthy berlinetta built by Scaglietti, and a luxurious grand touring spider built by Pininfarina.

Though the two models shared many mechanical components, they differed dramatically in style and final result. Pininfarina’s design for the open-top 275 GTS was a throwback to earlier Ferraris, utilising a shorter bonnet than the berlinetta, while featuring a prominent front grille, handsome wing vents, and a truncated tail to effect the dimensions of a classic Italian roadster—along the lines of similarly styled cars emerging from Milan and Turin. Spiders were offered with wire-spoke wheels only, and though they were equipped with the same 3.3-litre engine as the GTB, the GTS therefore had a character all of its own, as an elegant touring car rather than a purposeful racer. In this respect, the 275 GTS was an ideal replacement for the luxurious 250 GT Cabriolet that had ceased production in 1962; in every respect its spiritual successor.

Just 200 examples of the 275 GTS were built through early 1966, endowing the model with a much greater rarity than its closed-roof counterpart. The touring spider remains prized by Ferrari enthusiasts today for its sublime coachwork, enjoyable open-air drive experience, and powerful drivetrain.

Chassis 07563 was delivered new to the United States through Luigi Chinetti Motors and delivered to Bill Harrah’s MCM Modern Classic Motors in Reno, Nevada. Soon after, the Ferrari was sold to its first owner, Dr. Liz White in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. For just under 40 years, the 275 GTS would remain in the state, with just two additional owners. In 1993, a sale advertisement described the car as having 38,000 miles on the odometer with original paint and excellent cosmetics. At this point, the car was sold to an individual in Portland, Oregon. Its residency in the Pacific Northwest continued into the new millennium, but by 2007 the Ferrari was listed for sale in Italy. The car has remained in Europe to the present day, having joined The Aurora Collection in April 2015.

In April 2007, the 275 GTS was issued Ferrari Classiche certification and is accompanied by its Red Book binder. The certification verifies that its mechanical equipment, including engine and gearbox, further to its body and chassis, match factory records. In addition, the exterior is finished in its factory-correct colour, Rosso Cina, however, the interior leather has been changed from Pella Nera to Pella Beige. The 275 GTS will be accompanied by a toolkit and tonneau cover.

An extremely desirable example of one of Pininfarina’s most successful open-topped designs, this 275 GTS would undoubtedly enhance the collection of any Ferrari enthusiast or sports car aficionado.
