In 1960, Ferrari took a decidedly different approach when it unveiled a new “2+2” version of its vaunted 250 model at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. Badged the 250 GTE 2+2, this luxurious grand tourer featured a spacious cabin with a rear occasional seat. It is noteworthy for being the first four-seater Ferrari manufactured on a large scale. It was powered by the company’s new “Tipo 128F” 3.0-litre V-12 engine. Production spanned 1960 to 1963, with an updated version launching every 12 months. According to marque expert Marcel Massini, just 355 examples of the Series II model were produced from 1961 through the end of 1962.
Rolling off the production line in November 1962, chassis 3947 was delivered new to the Ferrari dealer Crepaldi Automobili in Milan, Italy on 10 December. Painted in the elegant colour of Grigio Notte, the cabin was upholstered in lavish Rossa Connolly leather.
A limited amount of information exists about this car’s time in Italy, but in October 1988 Massini noted this Ferrari was registered in Norway. The same owner later re-registered this vehicle on the very appropriate “F 250” Norwegian licence plate. On 11 January 1993, the second Norwegian owner took possession of this 250 GTE, and the following year displayed it at an exhibition in Sjølyst, Oslo. In May 2008, chassis 3947, then painted a shade of red, left Norway.
It is believed that sometime between May 2008 and October 2012, chassis 3947 underwent restoration. On 12 October 2012 it received the coveted Ferrari Classiche “Red Book” certification. The 250 GTE retains its matching-numbers chassis, differential, and engine, while it is finished in the factory-correct colour scheme of Grigio Notte over a Pelle Rossa interior.
Today, chassis 3947 presents a brilliant opportunity to acquire one of Ferrari’s most commercially successful grand tourers, with the benefit of Ferrari Classiche certification, and a beautiful colour scheme.
