Until not so many years ago, Pininfarina was the coachbuilder that had a monopoly on the design of most production Ferrari bodies. However, in the 1970s Bertone won the order to produce the new 308 GT4, an aggressive but elegant 2+2 to be produced from 1973 until 1980. In 1975, due to the 38 per cent tax that heavily penalised cars with engines over 3 litres, Ferrari introduced the 208, which was nothing more than a 2-litre version of the 308 GT4. Compared to its bigger sibling, the 208 was distinguished by a single-exit exhaust pipe, the absence of fog lights and slightly smaller tyres. The 208 retained the same layout as the 308 and was powered by the same 90° V8, but its bore and stroke were reduced, as was its power output: 170 hp. Placed in a transverse rear position, it was a design by engineer Bellei, who had already designed the engine for the 158, winner of the 1964 Formula 1 drivers' and constructors' world championship.
The futuristic wedge-shaped lines recalled the contemporary Lancia Stratos and Lamborghini Urraco: elegant and discreet, the 208 was an excellent alternative for those customers who, in addition to sportiness, favoured comfort and a more spacious passenger compartment.
This 1977 example still retains its original interior, as well as the rare set of factory books, including the warranty card. In good overall condition, it has been repainted over the years in the black colour it is in today. From our inspection of the car, we believe that the original colour was Dino Brown, although we cannot confirm this. The bodywork shows signs of use over time and we believe that cosmetic work is advisable.
The car has been used occasionally in recent years and was last serviced in 2008. At the end of 2022 the brake system was overhauled and both brake hoses and callipers were replaced. Application for ASI membership was submitted in February 2023. Functioning and in good overall condition, it is preferable to carry out a thorough check of the mechanics before regular use.
As rare and endearing as only a Ferrari can be, this 208 is ready for its new life with its new owner.
