Description

  • Loosely based on the BMW 326
  • Four-door saloon powered by a 2-litre, six-cylinder engine making 55 PS
  • Benefits from long-term ownership; acquired by the consigning keeper in December 1997 ahead of a restoration
  • Presented in burgundy over beige fabric upholstery, featuring wood grain trim

Built in Eisenach, the EMW 340 was loosely based on the underpinnings of the BMW 326. While the East German model gained a distinctive nose design, beneath the four-door limousine-style bodywork sat an engine of the same design—a 1,971-cc six-cylinder unit making 55 PS mated to a four-speed transmission that boasted synchronised third and fourth gears.

This example heralds from 1953. It was originally imported to Finland for the first owner, a chief of police in Vöyri in the west of the country, who registered the car on 7 December. During the early 1960s, since acquired by a third owner, chassis 43597 ran into engine trouble so endured a 30-year spell off the road. That was until, in December 1997, it was bought by The Munich Masterpieces Collection. A protracted restoration was completed in 2015. Today, this 340 is presented in burgundy over beige upholstery and features wood grain trim.

A luxurious and significant entry into the BMW/EMW history books, here is an opportunity to acquire a restored example of the rare 340.
